Super Ascorbate C-2000 Powder 8 oz Review

The previous reviewer says this "does not mix well with water." Yes it is a bit cloudy and tastes a bit tart because of all the natural buffers and synergists! So if you like, add a bit of fruit juice or stevia powder.

Today I just happened to see unbuffered vitamin C crystals on Amazon with 5 star reviews. I did not see Super Ascorbate C even listed as an alternative. So I just thought I'd put in my 3 cents.

In my opinion, nobody should ever buy or sell non-buffered vitamin C. Long term use can promote acid imbalance and leach calcium from the bones.

There are some "buffered" C's that are not fully reacted. If one of the "ingredients" is "ascorbic acid," that is NOT fully buffered. That is a mixture of buffered and non-buffered, or it is simply vitamin C with some low-grade and indigestible calcium carbonate added. The good ones are 100% "ascorbates." This means the ingredient will say something like "calcium ascorbate" and it will NOT say "ascorbic acid."

Twinlab also makes an "Ascorbate C" powder which should not be confused with "SUPER Ascorbate C." Now Foods also has a "calcium ascorbate" C that is similar and about half the price. Do not buy any vitamin C from Walmart, please, unless you want traces of lead or who-knows-what. If you want to go cheap, then use the Now Foods product. However, if you only use a little then why not use the best? And if you use a lot then you had better use the best! Because it is more balanced. So why not always get the best?

Any vitamin C is relatively inexpensive for what it does. The special advantage of Super Ascorbate C is that it is a mix of several different ascorbates, thus noticably more gentle. In addition, Super Ascorbate C contains a thorough mix of synergists such as rose hips, bioflavonoids, rutin and hesperidin. Some companies claim to produce a "more natural" form of vitamin C. That would be very nice if they added these natural synergists, but they don't. Super Ascorbate C might not be perfect, but it is twice as good as anything else I have found. If you want it more natural, then mix it 50-50 with rose hips powder or acerola powder or similar natural powders.

I do not use Ester C, which is not fully buffered. Ester C is more powerful, and may be useful for short term needs, but long term use can promote acidity and mineral loss, in my opinion based partly on personal experience.

I normally take about 1/4 teaspoon Super Ascorbate C with 1/4 teaspoon Lysine, once daily in about 1/3 cup of bottled spring water. Lysine is a mild protein that blocks the replication of viruses. I do not add any juice or sweetener. I also take 1 lysine capsule and 1 Alacer Super Gram II vitamin C tablet twice daily--morning and evening. However I double the frequency while traveling. Also at the first sign of a cold, flu or sore throat, I will take both the powders and the tablets every hour through the day. Thus for years I have never developed a cold or flu.

In theory, your body only uses a few hundred milligrams of vitamin C and the rest is excreted. Some doctors argue that you never need more. However, that is almost like saying you can take a bath in a quarter cup of water because that is all your body uses. Numerous drugs as well as vitamins are mostly excreted but require a saturation level for effectiveness. Numerous studies indicate the effectiveness of vitamin C. The final word is just to try it for yourself.

In theory, high doses of vitamin C may cause your body habitually to excrete vitamin C rather than to utilize it. On the other hand, in my experience, the intermittent effect of powdered C dissolved in water--and thus absorbed rapidly--can boost effectiveness. Therefore I think it helps to take both powders and pills. Powders in water are more fast-acting and more deeply absorbed. Pills are more sustained and less often forgotten. This naturally results in dosage variance and can achieve extra-good results without extra-high doses.

Incidentally, once every morning, I also add to my C - lysine water: contents of 1 capsule Now Magnesium-potassium (opened), 1 capsule Now Glucosamine-MSM (opened), and 3 drops BioSil organic silica. In this way I help prevent cramps, clean the arteries, and strengthen the bones and joints--even when I am not in the mood for taking any pills.
