While it's a pretty simple design, this is my favorite peak flow meter for kids and adults and the one that I most recommend. You simply shake it down to reset it, then blow fast and hard into the mouthpiece. It is important that it is held between the teeth (not in front of the teeth) with lips making a seal around the mouthpiece; and that all the air is exhaled through the mouth and not the nose when you do the "blow out fast and hard!" maneuver. You should always take the best of three for your measure. Typically one would do this every morning to see how they are doing and also when they begin to feel short of breath to see how their numbers have changed.

This meter comes with the zone stickers, which have green (good)/red (danger)/yellow (caution) so that you can mark where you ought to be on your peak flow meter and track any changes. (There is an enclosed chart you can use so that you're able to set up the zone guide based on the normal ranges for your age/height - If your child is too young to be listed on the enclosed charts, your healthcare practitioner can set it up for you).

It isn't hard to do at all and is assures a more accurate reading (providing you shake it down - if it isn't shaken down to zero your reading will be off, but that is the same with any peak flow meter that isn't digital and needs some form of a manual reset).

This is a great peak flow meter. It is simple, will last virtually forever, and is what I've used for both kids and adults in most of the various medical centers I've worked.
