Twinlab Emulsified Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, Mint 12 oz ( Multi-Pack) Review
I've been purchasing Twinlab's NON-emulsified cod liver oil for awhile and have been very pleased. I quickly noticed a positive difference in my joints and a huge decrease in pulled muscles. So distinctly, that if I forget to take it for a few days, I start to notice my joints popping more and will start getting little muscle pulls in my back or knee (which isn't even the main reason I take it, but it's one of the easiest to identify). As soon as I start it back up, I'll immediately notice these things decreasing again.
While Twinlab is definitely not the best cod liver oil on the market, it is a very good value which is important when being consumed daily by a family of 5. It was also recommended in the "Good" category on Weston A Price .org (search for "Cod Liver Oil Basics and Recommendations" by Sally Fallon).
It has become harder and harder to find the NON-emulsified versions and I ended up trying this emulsified mint version (and the emulsified lemon at the same time). Pros was it was somewhat tasty in my opinion (although technically, just non-fishy rather than tasty. Two of the kids liked it, one of the kids and husband claimed it tasted like toothpaste). Cons was the huge difference in the list of ingredients, and it seemed ineffective. We used it for a month or so and I didn't think anything of it until I started getting some pulled muscles, and my kids resistance to colds and little bugs getting passed around seemed to decrease from their usual hardiness, even when we had been taking it more regularly than we ever had (which I realize could be a coincidence, but after taking it for almost 2 years I noticed a difference). That's when I compared the ingredients to an old bottle of non-emulsified bottle we had and I started wondering about it.
Twinlab (non-emulsified) Cherry Cod Liver Oil Ingredients:
Cod liver oil, cherry flavor
Twinlab (emulsified) Mint Cod Liver Oil Ingredients:
Filtered water, cod liver oil, glycerin, sorbitol, soy lecithin, cellulose, tragacanth (astragalus) gum resin, mint flavor, apple pectin, alpha tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate.
The emulsified version is also lower in Vitamin D and Omega-3 Fatty Acids (both EPA and DHA).
So I quickly ordered a 3-pack of NON-emulsified cherry (one of the few non-emulsified ones left), and after a few days, I immediately noticed the positive effects once again I had grown accustomed to from regularly taking cod liver oil. I get this one here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GCTUYS/ref=rcxsubs_mys2_product_title
I will say that we've had one or two batches of the cherry that I really didn't care for taste-wise (almost bitter), but I'm glad I gave it another shot, because the batch we just got tastes much better. Even after the sweeter mint and lemon ones, the kids surprisingly love the non-emulsified cherry just as much and excitedly ask for it (ha, more so than I do). So I gave this mint version one star due to the company offering an affordable product (and gave the emulsified lemon version an extra star b/c it tasted better than the mint in my opinion), but I will not be buying their emulsified versions again, and was very disappointed to see the difference in ingredients. I really hope Twinlab doesn't stop carrying non-emulsified flavored versions as seems to be the trend, and it makes me wonder if it's cheaper to produce (being that it isn't as pure). Otherwise, I'm going to have to resort to just their plain cod liver oil, which I must admit, I've always been a little scared to try ;-)
