I bought this umbrella to keep in my bag for school, and it seems to be small enough (though larger than I imagined) to serve this purpose. The top It will automatically open at the press of a [rather stiff] button on the handle, giving me enough protection from the rain to keep both me and my bookbag out of the rain. This umbrella lacks an auto-close feature, so you'll have to close it by hand.
