Vicair Wheelchair Cushions - Adjuster, High Profile 3.5", 20" x 18" Review

I am an aging paraplegic with a spinal-cord injury I sustained in 1977. I've been mostly independent doing almost all of my personal care. Unfortunately, like most paraplegics I have had problems with skin breakdown. Skin breakdown results from sitting on wheelchair cushions that do not adequately relieve pressure and heat on the buttocks. Skin breakdown can be a very serious problem and can even result in death as in the case of Christopher Reeve.

A great cushion that can prevent skin breakdown is known as the Roho. The Roho is essentially an inner-tube shaped like a seat cushion. It has a valve and you pump air into it. The problem with the Roho is that it can spring leaks requiring patching.

Another problem with the Roho is that it sits the user fairly low into the cushion. When I was younger and stronger, sitting that way was not a problem. Now that I'm aging I am having difficulty transferring into bed because I have trouble lifting myself over the wheel of my wheelchair from the Roho.

I was lucky to have a good occupational therapist have me try transferring with the Vicair Adjuster cushion. I immediately noticed that it made transfers much easier! It's firm, smooth, and sits me higher allowing me to more easily get over that wheel into bed. I ordered an Adjuster and have used it for over a week. Not only does it make transfers easier, but it requires little maintenance. It cannot go flat like the Roho.

My one complaint was that the Vicair Adjuster is a bit wide for my wheelchair. I is 18 inches wide which makes it fit too tightly between the armrests of my wheelchair. However, I spoke to the manufacturer since my purchase and was informed that smaller cushions are available.

In any case, the Vicair is probably the best cushion you can get. I think it may have saved me from needing to go into assisted living or worse yet, a nursing home!
